Training for Aeronautical Met. Forecasters

Course aim

To improve the forecasting and awareness of aviation weather impact variables and to review new developments in aeronautical meteorology using the aeronautical meteorological forecaster guidelines as described in WMO-No. 258, Supplement 1: Training & Qualification Requirements for Aeronautical Meteorological Personnel.

Operational Aeronautical Meteorological Forecasters.

Course content

  • International aviation overview
  • Reviewing METARs, TAFs and Trends
  • Tephigram revision
  • Diagnosing and forecasting turbulence
  • Diagnosing and forecasting icing
  • Diagnosing and forecasting cb clouds and severe convection
  • Diagnosing and forecasting low cloud and poor visibility
  • Snow forecasting techniques
  • Understanding aviation charts and warnings and the operation of the Aviation Product Unit
  • New aviation products and development
  • Developments in satellite imagery
  • Visit the Met Office Ops Centre and talk to our aviation forecasters

Trainees successfully completing the course are awarded a certificate for the completion of this course.

Courses may be tailored to meet your specific needs and are prepared and provided to a set of internationally recognised standards, as described by the World Meteorological Organization training and education guidelines document, WMO-No. 258. These standards have been adopted by ICAO to ensure best practice worldwide. The Met Office fully endorses and adheres to these standards. All courses are delivered in the English language.
